Carl Johnson killed Big Smoke for betraying the Grove Street Families to affiliate himself with the Ballas. Big Smoke actually showed remorse but he was too far gone into drug trafficking and establishing an empire within the business.
CJ is either his uncle, with Denise being his aunt. This should be considered because in the GTA V trailer she looks like Denise Robinson from GTA SA. CJ and Franklin look alike in a few ways. They both have muscles in their default look.

Not much is known about Niko's life during the events of Grand Theft Auto V. It is hinted that he has completely given up a life of crime, and has now retired. ... By using a camera to zoom in, the page is revealed to be that of Niko Bellic, complete with an image of the character.
Other than a carefully placed Easter egg, there's no reference to C.J. at all, this is because GTA V is in HD era while San Andreas was in the 3D era. According to @CaulynDarr the only character that has appeared in both GTA: SA and GTA V is Lazlow. He is in all the games.
Due to taking crystal with his girlfriend, it ultimately led to him getting killed by Trevor. That's because his story was told, and it's not about him and his friends anymore.
The Grand Theft Auto series is full of bad people. ... Niko probably has one of the darkest back-stories of any GTA main character, and while people love him because of his sullen, direct nature – he's not all that of a good guy once you look at some of the things he does in GTA IV.
After he lost his friend and associate, Dimitri had to fend for himself. Feeling weak and especially vulnerable, he couldn't trust anyone else enough to ally with them, so his only choice was to betray (and kill) people he was done with, once they got too close to him.
Darko Brevic
Niko assures him that his is on his way. Later, Niko arrives at the church and witnesses Roman and Mallorie get married.
Niko's nationality is never specified in the game, and has been a subject of some debate. It was believed by some that he was Russian, Serbian or Croatian.

"Kent Paul's 80's Nostalgia Zone" is a semi-fictional website dedicated to his Vice City antics, which was created by Kent in 2002. On the website, Kent mentions Tommy Vercetti, calling him "Tom." Because of this, it appears Tommy is still alive - although it's unclear if he's still kingpin of Vice City.
Tommy was sentenced to death for the murders, but since he kept quiet and turned no evidence on the Forelli Family, Sonny Forelli used judicial connections to commute the sentence. Tommy remained in prison for fifteen years, refusing to divulge any Forelli Family secrets to the LCPD.
Tommy killed Lance for his betrayal while siding with Sonny Forelli. When Tommy was rising as a kingpin of Vice City, Lance went restless and want equal share and power without doing any hard work.
GTA 3's infamous protagonist, Claude, kept his mouth shut throughout the entire game. ... "So we decided that the game's protagonist would not talk, partly to aid people identifying with him, but mostly because we had so many other problems to solve and this did not seem like a major issue."
Tommy Vercetti was deliberately characterised as a vicious, amoral murderous psychopath, so that was OK. ... After the power you could attain in VC, with Tommy becoming the big fish at the head of a massive gang, CJ just doing what other people tell him to do feels like a step backwards.
Tommy Vercetti
Vance felt sidelined/disillusioned after he and Tommy overthrew Ricardo Diaz. ... So, Lance betrayed him. He revealed to Sonny Forelli that the cash payment Tommy was making was counterfeit. This prompted Sonny to come prepared - bringing a large number of gunmen to the Vercetti Estate (the scene of the final mission).
