Ledger, 28, was found unconscious at 3:26 p.m. and pronounced dead minutes later by emergency medical personnel, said Det. Madelyne Galindo, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department.
That same month, in a videotaped junket interview with The Envelope, the Los Angeles Times’ awards-show website, Ledger was clearly slurring and unfocused as he discussed his role in “I’m Not There,” a film refracting Bob Dylan’s life.
His first Hollywood film was the comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, and his Petruchio-like Patrick wooed Julia Stiles' shrewish Kat in a persuasively contemporary way.
Police did find prescription sleeping pills in a container in the bedroom and other pills in containers in the bathroom, but Browne said it was too early to establish a cause of death.
Australian actor Heath Ledger, whose role as a tormented gay ranch hand in Brokeback Mountain earned him an Oscar nomination two years ago, was found dead Tuesday in his New York apartment. Police say drugs might have been involved. Ledger, 28, has a 2-year-old daughter with actress Michelle Williams.
It was on the set of “Brokeback” that Ledger met Michelle Williams, who portrayed his on-screen wife. The two were engaged when their daughter, Matilda, was born in October 2005. The pair separated in September.

Though his personal life might have been in turmoil, Ledger’s professional life was flourishing in the months before his death. Near the end of 2007, he was in London filming Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. In addition to a role as one of several Bob Dylan alter egos in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There, he had also recently finished work on The Dark Knight, the latest Batman film, in which Ledger played a younger version of the Joker, the villainous role originated by Jack Nicholson. In interviews that would be scrutinized exhaustively after his death, the actor admitted that the Joker role had been difficult for him and that he had been using prescription drugs to manage recurring bouts of stress and insomnia.
The apartment where Ledger was found is in a posh section of SoHo known for its sprawling, high-ceilinged lofts. A listing for a 4,400-square-foot unit in the building at 421 Broome St. is on the rental market for $23,000 a month, according to a listing on Corcoran.com, which describes the unit as “a perfect evolution in modern luxury living.”
“It’s sort of like James Dean died in this age,” said Daniel Lonsbury, 18, referring to the 24-year-old actor killed in a 1955 auto crash. John Payne, 20, added that he felt like he “grew up” with Ledger.

“People say it’s so pretentious, so arrogant, so this and that. But it’s truly a wonderful place. You don’t have to go to the places where that stuff goes on. You don’t have to go to Beverly Hills, you don’t have to go to the parties,” he was quoted as saying.
