Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 2 What I like

The Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 2 is a better speaker for outdoor use than the Sony SRS-XB33. The Ultimate Ears feels better-built, has a more neutral sound profile, and its soundstage seems more wide and spacious. However, the Sony has better controls, it supports your smartphone's voice assistant, and it has a companion app with a basic graphic EQ. It also has low iOS and Android latency, although some apps seem to compensate for latency differently.

On top of the unit you'll find buttons for power and Bluetooth pairing, as well as a fabric loop you could use to hang the speaker or carry it. The Wonderboom 2 improves on the design on the original by including a center button on top that lets you control playback (the previous model had the same features, but it lacked an obvious button). Press it once to play or pause a track and twice to skip ahead. You can adjust the volume with the large + and - buttons on the side.

Should you buy the UE WONDERBOOM 2?

Ultimate Ears' first WONDERBOOM Bluetooth speaker was a big deal upon its release, enticing customers with its big sound, compact size, and water resistance. And now, with an upgraded model coming out, there's even more to like about this excellent product.

Upon unboxing the WONDERBOOM 2, you immediately notice its heft and durability. The speaker grille feels expensive, and it should. Pairing with a device is as simple as turning on the speaker and pressing a button, and after the first time pairing, the speaker connects instantly each time it's turned on. This is the first speaker I've used that's capable of pairing with two devices at once, and it works seamlessly. Once both devices are paired, the speaker intelligently switches between them based on where audio is playing with no other assistance needed.

Features

It's not all good news, though. Soundstage was a weak point of the original Wonderboom and it still is with the second generation. However, Ultimate Ears added the ability to play in true stereo if you pair another Wonderboom 2 where as the first gen could only link up to boost volume. 

Around the back you’ll find a plastic door that seals the speaker’s microUSB charging port. In 2019, you’d expect a speaker to come with USB-C to charge but alas, Ultimate Ears skipped it. It’s not a deal breaker but it’s a bit annoying that you can’t bring a single cable to charge all your devices.  

We cue up an iPhone and listen to The Waking by Kurt Elling on Spotify Premium. The first thing to note is that the extra bass promised by UE is here, and it pays dividends in the mix. Elling’s voice is as forward as we’d expect, but thanks in part to that extra bass injection, it never dominates.

Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 2 vs. UE WONDERBOOM (first-gen)

The Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 2 is a better speaker than the Bose SoundLink Color II overall. Thanks to its 360-degree design, the Ultimate Ears offers a wider-sounding soundstage. It can also get a bit louder with less compression present at max volume, resulting in cleaner audio at louder volume levels. Additionally, it's much better built with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance though we don't currently test for this. That said, the Bose supports voice assistants through your smartphone, though its performance isn't very good.

Ultimate Ears' popular WONDERBOOM portable Bluetooth speaker finally meets its successor this July, and while the first is still more than capable of rocking your socks off, the newest WONDERBOOM 2 features a few important improvements to make it worth the upgrade. Along with 30% more battery life, this latest iteration includes enhanced bass, an Outdoor Boost mode, and the ability to achieve true wireless stereo sound when paired with another WONDERBOOM 2.

The WONDERBOOM 2 is not just a durable travel speaker but also a superb option for listening at home while paired to devices like your phone, tablet, or computer. Considering its retail price of $99.99, it's a bit disappointing to find that it lacks smart features like app connectivity and voice activation. However, if you're looking for a booming Bluetooth speaker that takes up minimal space, can last all day long, and is even usable in your shower, look no further.

Build

The Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 2 is great for podcasts. Although it doesn't get very loud, it has a fairly neutral mid-range so it can reproduce accurate and clear vocals. It also has a wide and natural soundstage and supports multi-device pairing.

Unlike many Ultimate Ears Bluetooth speakers, the Wonderboom 2 doesn’t support the Party Up feature that allows connection to up to 150 other Boom speakers. Products like the Ultimate Ears Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 support this feature.

The Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 2 has an outstanding battery performance. While its battery life doesn't last as long as the next generation Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 3's 22 hours of playtime, it lasted just under 13 hours of continuous battery life, which is longer than the Bose SoundLink Micro and the OontZ Angle 3, making it well-suited for long listening sessions. The speaker automatically turns itself off after 15 minutes of inactivity to save battery life. However, battery life varies according to your usage habits and chosen volume levels, and your experience may differ.

UE Wonderboom 2 review: Design

The UE Wonderboom 2 features a slightly tweaked design, better bass response, longer battery life and Outdoor Boost make it an even better companion when you’re outdoors. Its ruggedness, sound quality, and features solidify the Wonderboom 2 as one of the best portable waterproof speakers you can buy.

I was most excited about bringing this speaker into the shower, and it was warranted. It's capable of being submerged in just over three feet of water for 30 minutes, so if you just can't help but sing while getting cleaned up, this speaker is a must-have. There's a protective cover that keeps its Micro-USB port safe while using this speaker around water, and you'll want to make sure that area isn't wet when recharging.
