On Friday, Nadal announced that he will not compete in the US Open and miss the rest of the 2021 season due to a chronic foot injury. Nadal has dealt with the foot injury since 2005 with great success, but the injury has severely hindered the 35-year old from Spain in the past year.
"In that moment, the doctors were very negative about my future career, but I was able to have a career that I never dreamed about. So I am confident that I will recover again the foot and if the foot is better, I am confident that my tennis and my mentality will be there again soon."
"I know you want to hear the other way, that I would love to play with him," Nadal said. "No, of course I understand that [it's] gonna be great for our history. Is true that we played in all [the other] Grand Slam finals. We never played here and for sure this year we are not going to play in finals. Finals are more special than semifinals, in that case."
In last year's thriller of a men's final at Flushing Meadows, Nadal edged Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 in 4 hours, 50 minutes. That gave Nadal four titles at the US Open and a total of 19 across all the Grand Slam tournaments, just one away from Federer's career mark.
That is supposed to be followed by the US Open itself. And then, two weeks after the US Open closes on Sept. 13, the French Open is scheduled to begin in Paris, having been postponed from its usual May start.
Rafael Nadal is one of the biggest tennis stars on the planet. The Spaniard is beloved everywhere he goes and New York is not the exception. However, he won't be seen at the Arthur Ashe Stadium this year. Here, check out why.
In 2008 and 2009, Nadal lost in the semifinals when Federer was already waiting in the final. The Iberian's defeat against Sir Andy Murray in 2008 was particularly surprising. In a match marked by rain interruptions, Nadal lost in four sets. This was so unexpected because Nadal played the tennis summer of his life in 2008. He won the French Open without dropping a set, was finally able to triumph at Church Road in Wimbledon, secured Olympic gold in singles on Beijing's hard court and was victorious at the Rogers Cup, one of the two Masters tournaments leading up to the US Open. In short: Nadal cleared 2008 - even became number one in the world for the first time. Nevertheless, it wasn't enough for his first final at the US Open.
On August 20, Nadal addressed his physical problems in a lengthy statement published on his social media in Spanish. The World. No 5 said that he’s been struggling all year with his foot, as he suffers from the Muller-Weiss syndrome, degenerative disease that generates dysplasia of the scaphoid (one of the foot bones). He has been suffering from this disease since 2005, as he explained in the statement.
"During the past year I was not practising and preparing myself the way that I need to to be competitive at the standards that I want to be, so we had to take that decision.
NEW YORK -- Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have never met at the US Open in their storied rivalry, and Nadal would like to keep it that way.
The problem: In "Federer's decade" Nadal never made it to the final, in "Nadal's decade" Federer was in the final in one of the years when Nadal himself failed early on.
World No. 1 Djokovic is a strong favorite to win this year's US Open, which coincidentally would also make him the first man to win all four majors in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969. But there is a growing feeling that the passing of the baton is not too far away. Federer is 40 and facing another rehabilitation after knee surgery, while Nadal has a foot injury which will keep him out the rest of the year.
With the 2021 US Open fast approaching, professional tennis has been hit with a string of withdrawals by notable competitors and some of the sport's biggest stars. That unfortunate trend continued Friday, as the US Open and all remaining tournaments in 2021 will not feature Rafael Nadal.

Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas and Berrettini (at this year's Wimbledon), have all made Grand Slam finals. Medvedev, Zverev and Tsitsipas have all won the ATP Finals. Their time may finally be here.

In 2013, the tableau was already looking for a confrontation. In the quarterfinals it could have already come to a classic. No, should come! But a Spaniard had other plans. Not Nadal, Tommy Robredo thwarted tennis fans. He beat Federer in three sets in the round of 16 in an uninspired performance by the Swiss. "Rafa" avenged his friend in the quarter-finals when he gave Robredo only four games and more than confidently advanced to the semi-finals.
